The Pesto Pioneers

It was 1990 and the dawn of a new decade. Pavarotti’s Nessun Dorma was ringing in everyone’s ears for the Italia ’90 World Cup, and Britain’s long-running love affair with all things Italian could no longer be contained…

And Sacla' UK was launched, the first overseas subsidiary of the business in Italy.

Never has a country embraced new food and experiences quite like Britain at this time. And Sacla' was there to meet the revolution head-on, pioneering a little-known product called ‘Pesto’, which showed people the art of delicious Italian simplicity. ‘Pesto Pasta’ became a family favourite in homes up and down the country, as it still is today, although the passing of time has seen the launch of many new recipes, all still made in Asti.

Food in all its glory has always been a way of life in Italy, and introducing Britain to its warm, inclusive and nurturing joys has been a true pleasure.

From fragrant Pesto, rich Pasta Sauces and mouthwatering Antipasti, nothing beats sitting around the table together with friends and family, discussing life and sharing plates of fresh, home-made food.

How we make our Pesto

From June to September, we harvest more than 4,000 tons of fragrant Italian basil, which travels from the fields to our state-of-the-art factory in Asti within just a few hours. Following our cherished family recipe, around 100 fresh basil leaves are used to make every jar of Sacla’ Classic Basil Pesto, blended with other premium ingredients to create The Nation’s Favourite Pesto. Watch this video to see how it all comes together.

FAQS

Is Pesto pasteurised?

Once the carefully selected, high-quality ingredients in Sacla’ Pesto have been expertly combined in the correct proportions, the mixture is dispensed into jars. These jars are then vacuum sealed for a perfect airtight seal, before being pasteurised for your protection using a mild heat treatment.

Is it safe for me to eat Pesto if I’m pregnant?

Premium pesto, such as Sacla’ Pesto, is safe to eat during pregnancy. While it contains Italian hard cheese, Sacla’ uses pasteurised cheese, which means it can be safely enjoyed even when pregnant.

How long does Pesto last once opened?

As Sacla’ Pesto is pasteurised, there is no need to store unopened jars of Pesto in the fridge. Simply use them before their ‘Best Before’ date. Opened jars should be kept in the fridge and can be eaten safely for up to 2 weeks without risk or noticeable loss of flavour.

Does Pesto freeze well?

Sacla’ Pesto can be stored in a home freezer for up to a month without any noticeable loss of flavour. Pesto can be frozen for longer (up to 6 months), but it will lose some flavour in this time. When used in a sauce or marinade, for example, this will hardly be noticed.

Where can I buy good quality Pesto in the UK?

Sacla’ Pesto is The Nation’s Favourite Pesto and is widely available in all major supermarkets, although the range will vary by store and location.
