AllergENs

Whether you need to, or choose to, avoid certain ingredients we have worked hard in our kitchens to make sure there is a Pesto for everyone. We haven’t yet managed to remove nuts though. None of our products contain any gluten, crustaceans, fish, peanuts, mustard, seasame, lupin or molluscs, but here is a list of any allergens our products do contain, including tomato, onion and garlic. We hope this table is helpful.

Nuts

One of the main ingredients in Pesto is nuts, and so we do use nuts in all our kitchens in Italy.  So whilst some of our products do not contain nuts, please be very careful if you have an allergy. Although Pine Kernels are a seed not a nut, we’ve included them here for anyone who has a Pine Kernel allergy. We hope this table is helpful.

Preparation and production

Our little jars are all created with care, flair and love in Asti, our home in Italy since 1939.

Many of the recipes have been handed down over generations, as have many of our little secrets, what we call our know-how.

And the recipes of our future will build on that family spirit of creativity, ingenuity and passion.

Recipe

There is no one Pesto recipe.  Every family and every town has its own favourite,  although it is widely agreed that the traditional recipe contains basil, nuts, oil and cheese.  Garlic is optional.

We have our own preferred recipe, handed down over generations, that does guarantee the intense taste which characterises Sacla’ Pesto.

There’s nothing quite like a freshly made basil from the Ligurian coast – but… it’s not that easy to get and homemade Pesto is expensive to make if you get the right ingredients.

So we offer up our recipe with great pride, for you to enjoy all year round.

Oil: We use mainly sunflower oil in our recipe so as not to overpower the other flavours.  It also helps keep the Pesto fresher tasting.
Nuts: We use a blend of pine nuts and cashew nuts to give the Pesto a creaminess and texture, and to protect the fresh taste of our Pesto over time.
Cheese: We use a traditional combination of hard Italian cheese, including Grana Padano (cow) and Pecorino (sheep).
Garlic: Of course, but not every Italian would agree with us!

Recycling

We take our responsibilities towards our environment seriously, doing our bit whenever and wherever possible (read more here).

When it comes to recycling, our glass jars are fully recyclable, as are our lids, paper labels and trays.

We recently launched Pesto Pots (to help minimise waste when a jar is just a bit too big for single households or when convenience is paramount).  These plastic pots are not always recyclable, depending on where in the country you live and your local council’s capability.

So if you aren’t able to recycle the pots, try re-using them instead.  They make great snack pots, leftover pots, dressings pots, spice pots, salt and pepper pots, anything goes pots.

And outside the kitchen how about seedling pots, paint tester pots, stationery pots and even jewellery pots.

There’s a Pesto for everyone and a pot for everything!

Sacla’

We are still family owned and run – it creates a spirit of real passion, energy and commitment.  You can read more about our family and our history here.

All our products are made in Asti, Italy.  Our UK office is mainly responsible for sales and marketing, and getting the jars on to shop shelves of course!  Our team are all pioneering and entrepreneurially minded with a sense of purpose so that we are each evangelists and ambassadors.  As such, we would always love to hear from you.

Salt

Italians enjoy their Mediterranean diet, eating in moderation with a focus on quality and quantity.  Our Classic Pesto, an authentic Italian recipe which we’ve been making for decades contains more salt than current government guidelines and recommendations but is well within limits when it’s eaten as part of a healthy, balance diet.

Because we want everyone to be able to enjoy our Pesto, we have reduced the salt in most of our other recipes so do check the labels.

And, if you prefer, do try our Reduced Fat Pesto which has no added salt or sugar.

Vegan

By replacing cheese with Tofu, we have made some of our favourite recipes vegan friendly. These are certified by the Vegan Society:

Free From Basil Pesto, Free From Tomato Pesto, Free From Mayonnaise, Char-Grilled Aubergine Pesto, Tomato & Olive Intenso, Tomato & Garlic Intenso and Sun-Dried Tomato Paste.

Vegetarian

Many of our products are suitable for vegetarians – after all, the Mediterranean diet features vegetables in abundance.  Some of our Pesto sauces contain Parmesan which is not vegetarian friendly, so here’s the list of our recipes that are certified by the Vegetarian Society:

Organic Basil Pesto, Organic Tomato Pesto, Tomato & Mascarpone Intenso, Free From Basil PestoFree From Tomato PestoFree From MayonnaiseChar-Grilled Aubergine PestoTomato & Olive IntensoTomato & Garlic Intenso and Sun-Dried Tomato Paste.

Where to buy

Happily, our products are widely available in national supermarkets and independent stores the length and breadth of the UK. You can find links on each product page to view which supermarkets stock each product.

We also have an online shop if there is anything particular you want and haven’t been able to find.  And, if all else fails, do call us and we’ll be sure to help.

…and if there’s anything we forgot, do get in touch!
